The Philippines has become a signatory to the Riyadh Design Law Treaty (DLT), joining members of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in establishing a more streamlined and standardized international framework for design protection.
The treaty was signed on November 21 during the Riyadh Diplomatic Conference in Saudi Arabia, according to a statement from the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL).
The DLT aims to simplify the design application process, making it more predictable and cost-efficient for designers by allowing multiple designs to be filed under one application and enabling representation in various formats, including drawings, photographs, and, where applicable, videos.
In addition to easing application procedures, the treaty introduces a range of beneficial provisions. These include a 12-month grace period for disclosures, options for keeping designs unpublished for up to six months, and simplified renewal processes. The treaty also emphasizes the promotion of e-filing and digital processes, addressing key issues that can lead to the loss of design rights.
IPOPHL Director General Rowel Barba highlighted the treaty’s alignment with the Philippines' efforts to boost its creative industries and foster global opportunities for designers.
He noted that the treaty would play a vital role in helping the country achieve its goals under the Philippine Development Plan 2023-2028 and contribute to the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.
