Megaworld hotels achieves 100% muslim-friendly certification

Megaworld Hotels & Resorts (MHR) has become the first hospitality chain in the Philippines to secure 100% Muslim-friendly certification for all 13 of its properties, awarded by the Department of Tourism (DOT). This milestone reflects the chain's commitment to inclusivity in tourism and catering to the needs of Muslim travelers.

Tourism Secretary Christina Frasco, during the awarding ceremony, described the certification as a significant step toward fostering inclusivity in the tourism industry. “This achievement mirrors our collective efforts to transform the sector sustainably and inclusively,” she said.

Certified Properties and Features

The certified properties include Belmont Hotel Manila, Savoy Hotel Boracay, Richmonde Hotel Iloilo, and others, with additional certifications for halal kitchens in select locations. Two hotels—Hotel Lucky Chinatown and Grand Westside Hotel—are set to obtain halal certification next year.

The initiative also extends to employee readiness, with all staff trained to accommodate the unique needs of Muslim guests. Amenities such as halal-certified kitchens, prayer mats, Qibla directions, and copies of the Quran are now standard in MHR hotels.

Muslim-Friendly Beach in Boracay

MHR, in collaboration with the DOT, introduced Boracay’s first dedicated Muslim-friendly beach in September. The 300-meter stretch at Cove 2 in Boracay Newcoast features amenities tailored for Muslim families. Filipino-Arab influencer Shaha Meta praised the initiative, noting that it provides a comfortable space for Muslim travelers while promoting inclusivity.

Growing Muslim Travel Market

The Philippines is strengthening its position in the global Muslim travel market, with 17 DOT-certified Muslim-friendly establishments nationwide. Tourist arrivals from Muslim-majority countries increased by nearly 10% in 2024, reaching over 547,000 visitors.

This recognition of MHR underscores the importance of inclusivity in the evolving tourism landscape, positioning the Philippines as a welcoming destination for travelers of diverse backgrounds.
