NUSTAR aims to position Cebu as Southeast Asia's premier gaming hub

NUSTAR Resort and Casino, under the Gokongwei Group, is making significant strides to transform Cebu into a leading gaming destination in Southeast Asia. With a substantial investment of P30 billion, the integrated resort aims to attract gaming enthusiasts and tourists from the Visayas, Mindanao, and neighboring countries.

Since its opening in May 2022, NUSTAR has rapidly become the sixth-largest casino in the Philippines, following established competitors in Metro Manila and Clark. Trevor Hammond, NUSTAR's senior vice president for gaming and integrated resort operations, highlighted the casino's impressive rise in a competitive landscape, noting the interest from international visitors.

“We want NUSTAR to be synonymous with Cebu—a beautiful island that offers a slower pace of life, combined with entertainment, shopping, and water activities,” Hammond stated. He emphasized that the resort provides a comprehensive experience that blends luxury, gaming, and leisure, setting it apart from other regional destinations like Singapore and Thailand.

NUSTAR is strategically positioned to leverage the growing interest in the Southeast Asian gaming sector. The integrated resort is currently experiencing a diverse clientele, with half of its customers coming from the mass market, primarily Filipinos and South Koreans. The affluent segment includes Filipino-Chinese and South Korean visitors, showcasing the resort's appeal across various demographics.

The gaming area at NUSTAR has expanded significantly since its launch, now encompassing 21,000 square meters, with plans for further growth. NUSTAR's gaming offerings are complemented by an array of dining and shopping options, catering to both local and international guests.

As part of its ambitious development plans, NUSTAR is set to open a new hotel with 223 rooms by the end of the year, adding to the existing Fili hotel, which boasts occupancy rates above the national average. These facilities are expected to enhance the luxurious experiences offered by the resort and cater to the growing demand for high-quality accommodations in Cebu.

Looking ahead, NUSTAR's leadership is optimistic about the potential for further expansion, including possible ventures into Luzon, where the gaming market is robust. Hammond indicated that the company remains open to opportunities for growth, particularly in areas with significant land-based gaming potential.

In addition to traditional gaming, NUSTAR is also exploring electronic gaming options through its new platform, Play Maxx, which is expected to contribute 20 to 30 percent of its gaming revenue in the future.

With these initiatives, NUSTAR is poised to elevate Cebu's status as a premier gaming destination, offering a unique blend of luxury, entertainment, and cultural experiences to visitors from around the region.
