Puerto Galera remains open to tourists

Puerto Galera, one of the top travel destinations in the province of Mindoro, has been confirmed by the Philippine Department of Tourism (DOT) to be free from the effects of the oil spill that occurred in the area. Tourism Secretary Christina Frasco stated that the municipal government of Puerto Galera confirmed that the area “remains negative of the oil spill effects."

Frasco also assured tourists that there have been no cancellations of travel plans and accommodation bookings in Puerto Galera and nearby major tourism destinations. In fact, the Philippine Tour Operators Association (PHILTOA) and the Hotel Sales and Marketing Association (HSMA) reported that reservations remain at over 90% capacity.

“We invite our fellow Filipinos to patronize Puerto Galera kasi patuloy po ang kanilang [because their] tourism offerings [continue],” Frasco added.

Puerto Galera is known for its pristine white sand beaches, lush greenery, and thriving marine biodiversity. Despite being located south of the Mindoro Island next to Calapan City, it remains one of the most accessible travel destinations for travelers coming from Luzon. It is also popular among divers due to its excellent diving spots.

HSMA president Loleth So confirmed that none of their members have been affected by the oil spill. She encouraged tourists to visit Puerto Galera, assuring them that the area remains safe and that their members are ready to serve them.

The DOT, however, acknowledged that 63 tourism sites and up to 1,000 tourism workers have been affected by the spread of thick bunker oil from the MT Princess Empress that capsized off Naujan, Oriental Mindoro, last February 28. Frasco promised that the DOT would extend assistance to affected tourism workers through training programs for alternative sources of livelihood.

Frasco also directed the DOT's regional offices to craft a recovery action plan to provide guidance to the affected tourism stakeholders. The plan aims to help the tourism workers and provide social protection to those affected by the oil spill.

In addition, the DOT will conduct a learning needs assessment to develop a training module on oil spills. This will help better equip tourism stakeholders in the event of similar incidents happening in the future.

Despite the oil spill incident, the DOT remains positive that tourism in the area will recover soon. With its lush greenery, pristine beaches, and thriving marine biodiversity, Puerto Galera remains a top travel destination for both local and foreign tourists.
