Energy firm eyes renewable growth through GEA-4 bid

Aboitiz Power Corporation is planning to participate in the Department of Energy’s (DOE) fourth Green Energy Auction (GEA-4), a move aligned with the company’s strategy to further expand its renewable energy (RE) footprint.

According to Leo Lungay, vice president and general manager for solar and wind at Aboitiz Renewables Inc. (ARI), the company is eyeing opportunities in integrated solar and battery storage systems (IRESS), one of the key focus areas under GEA-4. The auction also includes capacity for ground-mounted, rooftop, floating solar, and onshore wind installations.

“There are intentions to participate, particularly in projects with integrated energy storage,” Lungay told reporters during a recent plant tour. He emphasized the maturity of solar technology, noting that while IRESS is less common locally, it is not a new concept globally.

The DOE’s terms of reference for GEA-4 show that the Visayas region will have the largest targeted IRESS capacity, set at 100 megawatts for installation by 2026 and 2027.

ARI is also looking into the viability of floating solar projects. Lungay confirmed the company is assessing potential areas, noting that it currently has eight floating solar facilities in North Luzon.

The GEA-4 auction is scheduled for September 2, 2025, with the DOE expected to announce winning bidders by October 22.
