SteelAsia Manufacturing Corp. will open a P30-billion plant in Candelaria, Quezon.
In a statement, SteelAsia said the factory will make heavy structural steel products that the Philippines is presently importing.
“We will create around 7,000 jobs instead of giving jobs to China, Vietnam, Thailand, Korea and Japan, our major suppliers," said SteelAsia chairman and chief executive Ben Yao.
Yao said the plant would produce H beams, I beams, angles, channels, sheet piles, and plates with a carbon footprint that is 90 percent lower than that of the traditional steelmaking process.
"We use recycled scrap metal and employ electric arc furnace technology," he said.
Delivery lead times to projects will also be faster, from 3 to 4 months for imports to 1 to 2 weeks once the Candelaria plant is operational by 2027.
The factory will also help the Philippines save $1.2 billion yearly.
SteelAsia awarded the engineering, procurement, and construction management for the plant to MCC Huatian Engineering & Technology Co., Ltd.
MCC Huatian is the global leader and most experienced engineering company in building steel plants, having built more than 230 steel plants in 14 countries.
