The Department of Economy, Planning, and Development (DEPDev) is prioritizing digitalization as a key strategy to accelerate productivity and drive long-term economic growth in the Philippines, Secretary Arsenio Balisacan said Tuesday.
Speaking at the sidelines of the High-Level Conference for Middle-Income Countries (MIC) in Makati City, Balisacan underscored the critical role of technology in transforming both public and private sector operations to foster a more efficient and competitive economy.
“Digitalization, as you have heard, is one of the priorities of this government. That’s clearly going to be a major source of productivity growth,” Balisacan said. “And it is a top thrust of our government—digitalizing not just in the public sector but also the way the private sector deals with government.”
Balisacan emphasized that digitization efforts are firmly embedded in the Philippine Development Plan (PDP), reflecting the Marcos administration’s commitment to modernizing governance and economic infrastructure.
He acknowledged that the country’s digital economy is still developing, but expressed confidence in its growth trajectory. “The digital economy in the country is expected to be on an uptrend, especially since we're starting from a low base compared to our neighbors,” Balisacan noted.
Beyond digitalization, DEPDev is also focused on improving the investment climate and strengthening the competitiveness of Philippine exports amid evolving global trade dynamics.
These initiatives come as the government eyes the transition to upper-middle income status by 2026—a milestone that requires sustained economic growth and enhanced productivity across sectors.
