The new passenger terminal building (PTB) of the Clark International Airport is now ready to serve air travelers, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) announced Tuesday.

“The new passenger terminal building of Clark International Airport is now 100% complete,” the DOTr said.

The Transportation department said the expansion project for the Clark airport has been completed by end-September, ahead of its original completion data of October.

The new passenger terminal building (PTB) is slated to commence operations by January next year, as directed by Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade.

“Despite the current challenges brought by the COVID-19 pandemic, the DOTr, Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA), and GMR Megawide, ensured the accelerated construction works at Clark airport, and thus made a huge headway, while still observing strict health and safety protocols to protect workers and other project stakeholders,” the DOTr said,

The development, undertaken as a hybrid public-private partnership (PPP) project, was bagged by the Megawide GMR Construction Joint Venture Inc. (MGCJV).

The group counts as members Megawide Construction Corp., GMR Infrastructure (Singapore) Pte. Limited, and GME Holdings Overseas (Singapore) Pte. Limited.

The engineering, procurement, and construction contract for the project was signed on January 29, 2018, and involves the construction of a new 82,600-square meter PTB.

Once operational, it is projected that Clark airport’s current operational capacity will be tripled from the current 4.2 million passengers to 12.2 million annually.

“Likewise this expansion will elevate Clark airport’s stature as ‘Asia’s Next Premier Gateway,’ and is expected to significantly help in decongesting the passenger traffic at NAIA (Ninoy Aquino International Airport),” the DOTr said.

“The airport is also seen to accelerate economic progress in Central Luzon, and will provide an array of opportunities for job generation and more rapid tourism and socio-economic pursuits in the entire region, and the rest of its neighboring cities,” it added.
