With its rolling hills, dramatic coastlines, and views of Mount Iraya, Batanes province, the Philippines' northernmost point, emerges as a coveted destination.

Accessible by plane, the "Home of the Winds" retains its appeal despite high travel costs, attracting visitors with its unique Ivatan culture and serene landscapes.

The Department of Tourism (DOT) recently hosted a Philippine Experience Program (PEP) for nearly 100 travel industry stakeholders and foreign diplomats, including the ambassadors of Malaysia, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, and Indonesia, to showcase Batanes' tourism offerings.

The four-day itinerary, from March 26-29, featured the south of Batan island, including the Honesty Coffee Shop, Castano Ruins, Alapad Rock Formation, and the National Museum of the Philippines-Batanes.

Delegates also experienced a traditional "faluwa" boat ride to Sabtang Island, known for its Chavatan Village and Morong Beach. Chavatan offers visitors a glimpse into Ivatan heritage, with stone houses and traditional attire rentals.

The program concluded with a tour of northern Batan, highlighting lighthouses, Dibtangan Du Mahatao Farm, Racuh A Payaman pasture, Valugan Boulder Bay, and the Basco Rolling Hills.

Batanes is part of the United Nations' International Network of Sustainable Tourism Observatories (INSTO). DOT Secretary Christina Frasco emphasized the government's commitment to sustainable tourism in the province.

"Batanes is a leading example of sustainable tourism, where quality distinctly prevails over quantity," Frasco said.

Malaysian Ambassador Abdul Malik Melvin Castelino saw potential for increased Malaysian tourism, particularly with improved flight connections and Halal food options.

"There is a clear interest among Malaysians to visit new places," he said.

Vietnam Ambassador Lai Thai Binh described Batanes as a "destination of dreams," while Sri Lankan Ambassador Chanaka Harsha Talpahewa and Indonesian Ambassador Agus Widjojo expressed hope that the island retains its unique charm.

Frasco reiterated the DOT's focus on promoting Philippine culture and heritage alongside its natural attractions.
