The Philippines' rich culinary landscape and vibrant cultural heritage have captured international attention in the latest season of the popular Netflix series Somebody Feed Phil, hosted by Emmy-nominated food enthusiast Phil Rosenthal.
Episode 7 of the eighth season, now streaming globally, follows Rosenthal as he explores iconic Filipino dishes and vibrant street food across Metro Manila and Cavite. From enjoying taho in the cobbled streets of Intramuros to savoring classic dishes like sisig, kaldereta, lechon, and pinakbet, the episode paints a flavorful portrait of Filipino gastronomy.
The Department of Tourism (DOT) welcomed the Philippines' inclusion as a significant win for its campaign to promote gastronomy and film tourism. Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco emphasized that the collaboration supports the Marcos administration’s strategic push to elevate the country’s profile as a destination for cultural and culinary travel.
“Through this episode, we not only share our cuisine, but also our people’s stories, warmth, and creativity,” Frasco said, noting that such features attract tourists eager to experience the real-life destinations behind their favorite shows.
The DOT supported the show’s production in the Philippines, providing logistical and financial assistance through its Office of Film and Sports Tourism. Secretary Frasco also personally welcomed Rosenthal and his team during their October 2024 visit to Manila.
Rosenthal’s journey included stops at institutions like Trellis in Quezon City, Aling Sosing’s in Makati, and Grace Park, the restaurant established by culinary icon Margarita Forés. Modern interpretations were highlighted at Toyo Eatery, while his travels to Tagaytay and Alfonso featured rustic dining at Chicks ni Otit and grilled fare at Asador Alfonso.
Released worldwide on June 18, the episode has drawn acclaim from Filipino viewers and global fans of the show alike. Rosenthal himself praised the country for its "unique and undeniably world-class cuisine" and its "culture that embraces diverse influences and creates the sublime."
The episode’s release is expected to boost interest in Filipino food and travel, adding momentum to the country’s expanding film and culinary tourism sectors.
