Public Works and Highways Secretary Mark Villar declared that by 2022, Zamboangen%u0303os will no longer have to bear with the congested roads in Zamboanga City.

Secretary Villar made the announcement, citing the ongoing 17.21-kilometer Zamboanga City Diversion Road Project being implemented to provide an alternate road to Pagadian City-Zamboanga City Road - an established priority corridor located in Zamboanga City.

Now already 23.8 percent completed with 2.59 kilometers of the road already paved, Zamboanga City Diversion Road Project is envisioned to avoid city roads by constructing a new 2-lane road that stretches from Barangay Cabaluay to Barangay Sta. Catalina in Zamboanga City.

The project has so far received an allocation of P1.385 Billion since 2017. Remaining works of the diversion road project costing P1.104 will be at the forefront of DPWH Zamboanga Peninsula projects in 2021.

Upon completion of the project, travel time from Barangay Cabaluay and Barangay Sta. Catalina will be reduced from one (1) hour and 30 minutes to only 20 minutes, benefiting an average of 8,000 motorists per day.

Moreover, it will serve as an access road leading to the proposed new Zamboanga International Airport at Barangay Mercedes, Zamboanga City. (DPWH)
