Zamboanga Peninsula’s first flyover now open to motorists

Marking a significant infrastructure milestone for the region, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has officially opened the Zamboanga Peninsula’s first-ever flyover, located at the intersection of Governor Camins Road, MCLL Highway, and Veterans Avenue in Zamboanga City.

Instead of a formal inauguration, DPWH officials opted for a direct approach—conducting a final inspection on May 22, 2025, followed by the immediate opening of the structure to vehicular traffic. Leading the inspection was DPWH Secretary Manuel Bonoan, joined by Senior Undersecretary Emil K. Sadain, Undersecretaries Eugenio R. Pipo Jr. and Carlos G. Mutuc, and DPWH Region 9 Director Cayamombao D. Dia.

Also present were Zamboanga City Mayor John M. Dalipe, former Mayor Celso L. Lobregat, regional DPWH officials, and representatives from the Asian Development Bank, Department of Finance, and the Department of Economy, Planning, and Development. The officials had just come from a site visit to another road project linking Zamboanga Sibugay and Zamboanga del Norte.

The %u20B1450-million flyover spans 437.70 linear meters, including both the main structure and approach roads. Strategically positioned in one of the city’s busiest junctions, the flyover is designed to decongest traffic, reduce travel time, and enhance urban mobility.

“This project serves as a vital access road that will not only reduce travel time but also enhance road safety and stimulate economic activity in Zamboanga City and its neighboring provinces,” said Regional Director Dia during the briefing.

The infrastructure is expected to bring multiple benefits: easing traffic at critical intersections, eliminating conflicting traffic movements, improving regional connectivity, and supporting urban expansion. The smoother flow of goods and people is also projected to drive economic productivity in Western Mindanao.

The flyover is part of DPWH’s nationwide effort to modernize key transport corridors through the construction of flyovers, interchanges, underpasses, and long-span bridges—critical components of the government’s broader goal to accelerate regional growth and national development.
