Batanes breaks ground on new tourist rest area to boost vsitor experience

The Department of Tourism (DOT) broke ground on a new Tourist Rest Area (TRA) in this island municipality on Thursday, aiming to enhance visitor experience and promote local products in one of the country’s most picturesque destinations.

Tourism Secretary Christina Frasco led the ceremony during the Batanes leg of the Philippine Experience Program (PEP), announcing that the facility will offer clean, comfortable rest areas for travelers, as well as a hub for local crafts and products unique to the Ivatan culture.

“This TRA reflects our continued investment in tourism infrastructure to ensure that every tourist’s stay in the Philippines is both memorable and meaningful,” said Frasco, noting that the DOT plans to establish 100 TRAs nationwide, with 60 more projects expected to break ground before yearend.

The TRA in Batanes is funded by the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA) and will be turned over to the local government upon completion.

Vice Governor Ignacio Villa expressed gratitude for the DOT’s efforts to preserve Batanes’ cultural identity, pointing out that the new facility will incorporate the province’s iconic stone architecture.

“We are grateful that you embrace our unique architectural identity. This ensures that development remains true to Batanes’ roots,” Villa said.

Batanes Rep. Ciriaco Gato Jr. added that the project would also support local livelihoods, offering a platform for small businesses to showcase and sell their products to visitors.

In addition to the TRA, Frasco said the DOT is committed to supporting access infrastructure in the province, including road and port improvements. The agency is in coordination with the Department of Transportation to support Batanes’ request for expanded port facilities to bolster its marine economy.

“This project and future developments reflect our dedication to both preserving our heritage and supporting the growth of tourism-dependent communities,” Frasco said.
