PEZA, BOC equip exporters to maximize trade perks

The Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA), in collaboration with the Bureau of Customs (BOC), held a capacity building session to equip exporters and PEZA-registered business enterprises (RBEs) with tools to navigate global trade frameworks and benefit from preferential tariffs under Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) and Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreements (CEPAs).

Conducted in a hybrid format and attended by over 500 participants, the session focused on two critical trade facilitation mechanisms: the Certificate of Origin (CO) and the Authorized Economic Operator (AEO) program.

The Certificate of Origin is a key requirement to access lower tariffs under international trade agreements, verifying that goods are produced, manufactured, or processed in a specific country. It ensures eligibility for preferential treatment in partner markets, allowing companies to remain competitive globally.

The AEO program, meanwhile, recognizes companies with strong compliance records, offering benefits such as faster customs clearance, fewer inspections, and greater international credibility.

“Think of it as the next logical step in optimizing your trade operations,” said BOC Deputy Commissioner Atty. Vener Baquiran. “It’s about being recognized as a trusted partner, which can significantly enhance your reputation and competitiveness in the global arena, especially through mutual recognition arrangements with other countries.”

PEZA Director General Tereso O. Panga reiterated the agency’s commitment to supporting industry players in maximizing their global competitiveness.

“With all the global developments that make the Philippines a sweet spot for investments, PEZA reaffirms its unwavering commitment to promoting the policy of Ease of Doing Business,” said Panga. “We will continue to support our locators and stakeholders, especially in taking advantage of FTAs and CEPAs, as we advance the Philippines’ position as a premier destination for smart, sustainable, and inclusive industrial development.”
