A strategic roadmap unveiled by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) will open opportunities for Filipino businesses, the Department of Trade and Industry said, particularly the medium, small and micro enterprises that comprise the bulk of establishments in the country, according to a report by Manila Times.
Adopted during the just-concluded 46th Asean Summit in Malaysia was the Asean Economic Community Strategic Plan 2026-2030, a blueprint aimed at deepening the 10-member bloc's economic integration with a view toward becoming the fourth-largest economy.
The DTI said the plan would support digital transformation, innovation, sustainability and inclusiveness, aligned with the government's key priorities for Filipino MSMEs.
It will open opportunities for Filipino entrepreneurs to expand across the region's growing consumer base and partners outside Asean by reducing trade barriers, streamlining regional supply chains and promoting digital adoption, the department added.
Trade Secretary Christina Roque, who was part of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s delegation to the annual summit, said: "Asean remains to be a vital platform for advancing Philippine national interests through regional cooperation. ... Its unity and shared direction are crucial in building a resilient and competitive regional economy."

With the Philippines set to assume the Asean chairmanship next year, Roque said that "we are committed to a leadership that prioritizes people and businesses, especially MSMEs, at the heart of regional growth."
It will be an opportunity to shape regional initiatives that support the strengthening of trade relationships, empowering local industries, and fostering resilient employment for Filipinos, she added.
