BDO reports P1 trillion financing for clean energy, community development

BDO Unibank Inc. has financed more than %u20B11 trillion in sustainable projects since 2010, underscoring its growing role in supporting clean energy, infrastructure, and community development initiatives.

In a statement on Monday, the bank said it has disbursed %u20B11.04 trillion under its Sustainable Finance Program, funding projects that span renewable energy, green transportation, water systems, and resilient infrastructure.

Among the key initiatives is San Miguel Global Power’s Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), one of the world’s largest, with 32 facilities nationwide totaling 1,000 megawatt-hours in capacity. BDO served as anchor lender for the project, which aims to enhance grid stability and support renewable energy integration.

The bank also helped finance Citicore Renewable Energy Corp.'s Citicore Solar Batangas 1, now the largest solar plant in Batangas. Once operational, it is expected to generate 197 megawatts—enough to power approximately 158,000 households annually. The facility supports dual land use under Citicore’s AgroSolar program, which combines agriculture and solar energy production.

Another landmark project in BDO’s green portfolio is MTerra Solar’s integrated solar and battery storage complex between Nueva Ecija and Bulacan. The %u20B1150-billion venture, touted as the world’s largest of its kind, is expected to produce 3,500 megawatts of solar power and 4,500 megawatt-hours of battery storage capacity, benefiting about 2.4 million households.

“Championing sustainable infrastructure is more than financing. It is about laying the groundwork for a sustainable and climate-resilient future,” said Charles Rodriguez, executive vice president and head of BDO’s institutional banking group.

BDO’s green lending also extends to rooftop solar installations, energy-efficient buildings, and infrastructure designed to reduce carbon emissions. These efforts are guided by a board-approved Sustainable Finance Framework, which outlines 29 eligible categories under green, blue, social, and gender-focused projects.

The bank said its ongoing commitment to sustainability aligns with broader national and global efforts to address climate change while fostering inclusive economic growth.
