DEPDev calls for stronger whole-of-nation approach to meet SDG targets

The Department of Economy, Planning, and Development (DEPDev) has called for a stronger whole-of-nation approach to accelerate the Philippines’ progress toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

DEPDev Secretary Arsenio Balisacan made the appeal during the national presentation of the country’s 2025 Voluntary National Review (VNR) on August 27. He emphasized the importance of sustained collaboration across government agencies, civil society, the private sector, academia, and development partners to institutionalize efforts and meet critical targets under the 2030 Agenda.

“As we chart the path ahead, let us remember that the VNR at the national level and Voluntary Local Reviews at the subnational level are not the endpoints, but calls to action—urging the government, civil society, private sector, academia, and development partners, to redouble our efforts, innovate boldly, and work inclusively toward the 2030 Agenda,” Balisacan said in a statement.

The SDGs, adopted by the United Nations in 2015, consist of 17 global objectives aimed at ending poverty, protecting the environment, and fostering inclusive prosperity. The Philippines’ 2025 VNR provides an assessment of progress based on 2024 data and follows commitments outlined in the country’s third review last year.

According to the latest report, the Philippines has made notable gains in several areas, including poverty reduction, food security, quality education, clean water and sanitation, renewable energy, and economic growth. Advances were also recorded in infrastructure development, responsible consumption, and biodiversity protection.

However, the review highlighted ongoing challenges. Progress in health and well-being remains uneven, while gender equality goals require accelerated efforts to curb child marriage and expand women’s leadership participation. Climate change and income inequality were also cited as continuing risks to sustainable development.

“The VNR is more than a report; it is our evolving story of progress, resilience, and innovation in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals,” Balisacan said. “Today’s gathering is about bringing that story back home—aligning our efforts across the government, local communities, and stakeholders, while building on the lessons and commitments we shared on the world stage.”

During the event, DEPDev also introduced the Stakeholder Partnership Accelerator for Convergence and Engagement (SPACE), a digital platform designed to centralize coordination, information-sharing, resource mobilization, and monitoring of SDG progress.
