The Department of Transportation (DOTr) is seeking an additional %u20B13 billion in next year’s national budget to construct a new station along the Light Rail Transit Line 1 (LRT-1) Cavite Extension—Talaba Station in Bacoor, Cavite.
Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon announced that the proposed Talaba Station would be built between the future Zapote and Niog stations and was formally requested by the local government of Bacoor.
“This was a request by Bacoor, and it makes sense because Talaba station is in the area where there are new developments in Bacoor City,” Dizon said.
The new station will form part of the Cavite Extension’s ongoing expansion but will be funded directly by the government, while the project’s private operator, Light Rail Manila Corporation (LRMC), will take over its operations once completed.
Dizon said the LRMC has given its go-signal for the addition of Talaba Station, and construction is expected to undergo public bidding. The station will be built along the existing alignment of the extension, ensuring ease of integration with the rest of the project.
The LRT-1 Cavite Extension is being implemented in three phases. Phase 1 was completed and opened last year, adding five new stations to the 20.7-kilometer rail line. Phase 2 will include the Las Piñas and Zapote stations, while Phase 3 will now include both Niog and the proposed Talaba stations.
Phase 2 is targeted to be operational by 2028, and Phase 3—including the new Talaba Station—is scheduled for completion by 2030.
While projected ridership at Talaba has not yet been released, Dizon said he anticipates strong usage due to ongoing and future urban developments in the area. The full extension, excluding Talaba, is already projected to accommodate 300,000 additional daily passengers.
LRT-1 currently serves an average of 320,000 riders daily.
