The National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) Board, chaired by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., has given its approval to significant infrastructure initiatives aimed at boosting the country's connectivity and economic growth.
One of the key projects approved during a meeting at Malacañan Palace is the PHP170.6-billion Solicited NAIA PPP Project. Managed by the Department of Transportation and the Manila International Airport Authority, the initiative focuses on rehabilitating and expanding the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA).
The project aims to address long-standing issues at NAIA, such as inadequate passenger terminal buildings and restricted aircraft movement. With these enhancements, NAIA's annual airport capacity is projected to increase from 35 million to at least 62 million passengers, while air traffic movement will rise from 40 to 48 per hour. Additionally, the project seeks to improve overall passenger experience and service quality, reducing queues and waiting times.
Another notable project receiving approval is the PHP7.48 billion Samar Pacific Coastal Road 2 Project. This initiative entails the construction of the Laoang 2 Bridge and Calomotan Bridge, along with the improvement of existing roads between Laoang Island and mainland Samar Island. With a total length of 15 km, the project aims to enhance connectivity and facilitate smoother travel in the region.
The third project approved is the PHP12.75 billion Laguindingan International Airport Project. This unsolicited proposal in Misamis Oriental aims to integrate "green" and "connected" concepts into the airport's design and operation, incorporating digital technologies to elevate the passenger experience.
In addition to the new projects, the NEDA Board confirmed several changes in scope, cost, and design for four ongoing infrastructure initiatives. These adjustments aim to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the projects.
Furthermore, the NEDA Board discussed the adoption of a National Policy on Infrastructure Sector Master Plans. The policy's objective is to harmonize and rationalize master plans across the government, ensuring that they are coordinated, synergistic, and aligned with the sector's priority development strategies. An executive order is expected to be issued to strengthen its implementation nationwide.
These approved projects and initiatives mark significant strides toward achieving a more connected and prosperous Philippines. With continued support and efficient implementation, the country is poised for economic growth and development in the years ahead.
