A Japanese environmental solutions firm is exploring a potential investment in a large-scale waste-to-energy (WtE) project aimed at transforming waste management in the National Capital Region, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. confirmed on Friday.
Speaking during his official visit to Osaka, Marcos announced ongoing discussions with Osaka-based Kanadevia Corporation, which specializes in advanced WtE systems and environmental technologies. The project is envisioned to reduce landfill dependency, improve flood control, and generate clean energy and local employment.
“This initiative will turn thousands of tons of waste into clean energy, reduce flooding, create jobs and help clean up communities,” Marcos shared in a social media post.
The proposed development is being eyed for the former Smokey Mountain landfill site in Tondo, Manila. The Presidential Communications Office (PCO) said the project would be carried out in partnership with Philippine Ecology Systems Corp., a key player in waste management infrastructure in the country.
Kanadevia will act as the project’s technology provider and potential co-investor, bringing its experience in renewable energy systems and water treatment technologies to the table.
The project aligns with the Philippine government’s priorities in waste reduction, power generation, environmental rehabilitation, and the attraction of foreign direct investments. Once completed, the initiative is expected to deliver both environmental and economic benefits to Metro Manila.
