The population of Metro Manila has surpassed 14 million as of mid-2024, according to preliminary results from the 2024 Census of Population released by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).

As of July 1, 2024, the National Capital Region (NCR) recorded a total population of 14,001,751, representing 12.4 percent of the country’s total population of 112 million.

NCR ranks as the country’s second-most populous region after Calabarzon, which has 63.93 million residents. Central Luzon followed with 12.99 million.

The PSA said Metro Manila’s population rose by 517,289 since the 2020 census, when the region registered 13.48 million people. It also grew by over 2 million from 11.86 million in 2010.

From 2020 to 2024, the capital region posted an average annual population growth rate of 0.91 percent—slightly slower than the 0.97 percent recorded from 2015 to 2020.

The region comprises 16 highly urbanized cities (HUCs), one municipality, and 1,715 barangays. Quezon City remains the most populous city in Metro Manila, with 3.08 million residents. It is followed by the City of Manila (1.90 million) and the City of Caloocan (1.71 million).

The City of San Juan remains the least populous HUC in the region with 134,000 residents, while the municipality of Pateros reported a population of 67,000.

Among the HUCs, the City of Mandaluyong recorded the highest average annual population growth rate from 2020 to 2024 at 2.18 percent. Taguig followed at 1.61 percent, and San Juan at 1.48 percent. Valenzuela City had the lowest growth rate at 0.34 percent.

Among the NCR’s 1,715 barangays, Commonwealth in Quezon City registered the largest population at 215,035, followed by Pinagbuhatan in Pasig City (173,576) and Batasan Hills in Quezon City (168,770).

The PSA conducts a nationwide census of population and housing every five years to inform national and local planning and policy development.
