The Philippines and Chile are making progress in establishing a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), following bilateral talks held on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) trade ministers' meeting in Jeju, South Korea.
In a statement released Friday, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) confirmed that Trade Secretary Ma. Cristina Roque met with Chilean Vice Minister of Trade Claudia Sanhueza on May 15 to reaffirm both countries’ commitment to a future free trade agreement (FTA).
The meeting builds on earlier discussions held in December 2024 between Secretary Roque and Chilean Foreign Minister Alberto van Klaveren, where both sides formally launched CEPA negotiations. The agreement is envisioned to strengthen trade in goods and services while enhancing overall bilateral economic cooperation.
If concluded, the CEPA would mark the Philippines’ first FTA with a Latin American country.
Beyond CEPA, the two officials also exchanged views on broader regional trade efforts. Secretary Roque reiterated Manila’s interest in joining the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), while welcoming Chile’s bid to accede to the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP).
“We are grateful for the support that Chile expressed during our Joint Economic Committee meeting last November. We count on Chile’s continued engagement and encouragement throughout the accession process,” Roque said, referring to the CPTPP.
Roque likewise lauded Chile’s application to join RCEP, citing Santiago’s track record in promoting free and open trade.
“Chile’s strong economic credentials and clear commitment to open trade make it a fitting partner,” she said.
The Marcos administration continues to prioritize the pursuit of high-impact trade deals through the DTI, aiming to bolster inclusive growth, expand foreign investment, and open new export markets for Filipino businesses.
