Japan touted as driving force in PH green energy transition

Energy Secretary Sharon Garin has called on Japanese firms to strengthen their investments in the Philippines’ clean energy transition, underscoring Japan’s role as a key partner in the country’s long-term energy goals.

Speaking at a high-level courtesy meeting and roundtable discussion with the Kansai Economic Federation (Kankeiren) in Osaka, Garin said Japan’s contributions extend beyond financing to include technology and expertise.

“Japan is not just a partner, it is a driving force in the Philippines’ energy transition,” she said. “With Kansai’s advanced expertise and our ambitious renewable energy and decarbonization agenda, we can build mutually beneficial opportunities that deliver sustainability, energy security, and resilient growth.”

The Department of Energy (DOE) is working under the Philippine Energy Plan 2023–2050, which targets raising the renewable energy share to 35 percent of the total mix by 2030 and 50 percent by 2040. Japan has been providing technology and best practices to help reduce costs and emissions in industrial facilities and buildings, while also supporting the Philippines’ shift toward electric vehicles.

Garin also highlighted nuclear power as part of the government’s long-term energy diversification strategy. She said Japan’s expertise in nuclear energy could help the Philippines build “a safe, reliable, and sustainable program,” adding that the proposed Philippine National Nuclear Energy Safety Act is awaiting President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s signature.

“As one of ASEAN’s fastest-growing economies, the Philippines is a gateway to green growth, innovation, and long-term returns,” Garin said. “We invite Kankeiren and its member companies to invest in our energy future and help shape a decarbonized, inclusive, and resilient Philippine economy.”
