DOT, GTBA sign agreement to expand Halal tourism

The Department of Tourism (DOT) and the Global Tourism Business Association Inc. (GTBA) reaffirmed their shared commitment to advancing Halal and Muslim-friendly tourism in the Philippines during the 2nd Halal and Muslim-Friendly Tourism Forum held Wednesday at Seda Hotel in Cebu.

The event brought together government officials, industry leaders, and foreign dignitaries to explore policy directions and collaborative strategies aimed at making the country a more inclusive destination for Muslim travelers.

A key moment during the forum was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco and GTBA President Michelle Taylan, which formalized efforts to enhance the country's Halal tourism offerings.

In her keynote address, Frasco emphasized the value of respectful and inclusive tourism, citing the legacy of Filipino hospitality and historical resilience.

"Through Halal and Muslim-friendly tourism, we reaffirm that Filipino hospitality is not only warm—it is respectful. It embraces culture, honors faith, and upholds the dignity of all peoples," Frasco said.

The tourism chief also noted that the industry contributed 8.9 percent to the country’s gross domestic product in 2024, directly generating 6.75 million jobs and supporting nearly 10 million more indirectly.

GTBA President Taylan echoed the sentiment, saying the forum serves as a platform for celebrating diversity and promoting inclusivity. “By championing Muslim-friendly tourism, we aim to make our Muslim visitors feel at home, allowing them to practice their faith freely and experience the warm hospitality of the Filipino people,” she said.

The forum was also attended by ambassadors from Malaysia, Indonesia, Cambodia, Brunei Darussalam, and Lao PDR, as well as DOT undersecretaries and regional officials. The event marked a key milestone in the country’s bid to become a premier destination for Muslim travelers in Southeast Asia.
