Despite efforts to promote decentralization and countryside development, Metro Manila is poised to remain the central economic hub of the Philippines for the next decade, according to business leaders and industry experts.

Hernando Delizo, Vice President of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) - NCR and Chairman of the 2024 Metro Manila Business Conference, emphasized that while there are ongoing development projects outside the capital, Metro Manila's role in the Philippine economy will remain pivotal.

"In the next 10 years, I still see Metro Manila as the country's economic hub. These development initiatives in other areas will take time to materialize," Delizo remarked during a press conference held at Casa de Polo, Valenzuela City.

He acknowledged the challenges in infrastructure development, citing rising costs of materials and manpower. Despite the government's push for alternative economic centers like New Clark City in Central Luzon, Delizo believes depopulating Metro Manila is a complex task.

The upcoming rehabilitation of Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) and proposals for the Bulacan International Airport aim to ease congestion at NAIA by shifting air traffic to Clark International Airport temporarily.

Delizo expressed confidence that Metro Manila will evolve and sustain its growth trajectory. "We are adaptable and resilient. Metro Manila will continue to grow, albeit on a different scale," he affirmed.

To bolster Metro Manila's economic role, Delizo highlighted key challenges that need addressing, including improving ease of doing business, tackling traffic congestion through innovative solutions like a shorter workweek, and enhancing sustainability efforts to address environmental concerns.

The PCCI-NCR plans to address these issues through resolutions to be discussed at the upcoming 2024 Metro Manila Business Conference themed "Integrating Trade, Technology, and Tourism for Sustainable Economic Transformation," scheduled for August 21-22 at The Manila Hotel.

Delizo stressed the importance of uniform business taxes across Metro Manila and transparency in disclosing business tax rates to the public. He also suggested making Metro Manila more pedestrian-friendly to alleviate traffic congestion.

Additionally, Delizo urged the national government to incentivize investments in power infrastructure to enhance capacity and lower electricity rates, further supporting sustainable economic growth in Metro Manila.

As Metro Manila navigates these challenges and opportunities, stakeholders are optimistic about its resilience and adaptability in maintaining its status as the heart of the Philippine economy in the years to come.
